Jana Friedrich is a young, dedicated doctor from the countryside, currently completing her specialist training in forensic medicine. A dream of hers comes true with the offer of an internship with Kurt Bremer, a major role model of hers, at the renowned Hamburg Institute for Forensic Medicine. Jana has read all his books, and she knows working in this field is not like it is on a TV crime show. But she is shocked all the same when, instead of exciting criminal cases, she is confronted with various cases of children who have been abused. Jana soon experiences first-hand how difficult it is to bring those responsible to justice and to remove the children from their tormentors. When she and her mentor even fail in court, despite the death of an infant, she decides to take a more active role, risking her medical license and her own life.
