This film seeks to raise awareness about the discrimination against the Teman Tuli (Deaf Community) in Indonesia. Through Efata’s eyes, we witness the plights of the Deaf in a largely hearing society, where his deafness is seen as a disability that makes him an object of pity and a burden to society.
However, Efata’s accomplishments reveal that he is equally as capable as a hearing-person. In fact, the only inhibitions against progress and social inclusion of the Deaf are hostile social structures and people’s false assumptions about them.
Through Efata’s struggle on his journey towards adulthood and independence, we wish to shed light on this often-unspoken prejudice faced by the Teman Tuli, and advocate for equal opportunities for the Deaf.
