5 Films to Watch Before You Text Them Back

You’ve decided to make 2026 your year to find peace with yourself—but there’s that one person (or more, you do you) that you’re on the fence about. Situationships are tricky things, we get it. So for Valentine’s this year, we’ve rounded up five CinemaWorld film picks to help you decide if you should dive in or jump ship.

The “He Can Change” / “I Can Change Him” Choice: Hard Shell, Soft Shell (2021)

The Situation: He’s emotionally unavailable, but willing to pick up a new hobby that you enjoy.

When oyster farmer Azzedine proposes to his girlfriend, Jessica, over dinner, everything goes south pretty quickly—she chokes on the proposal ring, dumps him, and moves on swiftly.

Freshly single and heartbroken, Azzedine decides to join a dance class (Jessica’s favourite hobby)  to win his ex back. With the help of his friends and a dance instructor, Azzedine learns to navigate romance and to shed his “hard shell”, where he begins to discover a new side to himself.

The Verdict: If he’s willing to open up and show his vulnerable side, maybe he deserves a chance.

Summer Fling Gone Rogue: Romancing The Jungle (2017)

The Situation: A summer fling became something more… Is it love, or just high-intensity adrenaline?

Jane and Tarzan kind of romance… but there are pirates, and your love interest is a smuggler.

In this quirky, action-packed rom-com, Romancing The Jungle, clumsy but determined rookie journalist Eva wants to prove she can handle undercover reporting on piracy, but ends up in far more trouble than she bargained for.

Kidnapped by pirates off the coast of Thailand, she’s forced to fight for her life alongside the roguish smuggler Nik. From escaping through jungles and quicksand to a wild hot-air balloon chase, Eva must survive long enough to save her story—and Nik might just be her knight in shining armour.

The Verdict: If your situationship thrives in adventure, and it’s all up no down, it’s time to take a step back and reflect if they are truly “The One”.

Right Person, Wrong Time: Falling Into Place (2023)

The Situation: Right person, wrong time, etc. They are holding emotional baggage that’s hindering the relationship from moving forward—but it just feels so real.

In your 30s and not expecting to meet your soulmate anytime soon? They might exist—just not in your hometown.

Set between the windswept Isle of Skye and London, this tender romance follows Kira and Ian, two thirty-somethings who form a sudden, deeply affecting connection over a fleeting winter weekend. What begins as a chance encounter lingers long after they return to London, unaware that they live in the same city, and slip back into their separate routines.

A reminder that timing matters as much as chemistry, both Kira and Ian must first confront the parts of themselves they have been avoiding before they can meet again.

The Verdict: Soulmates come in every shape or form, but perhaps it's best to turn to therapy in the meantime.

The Slow-Burn, Arranged-Marriage Type: Stormskerry Maja (2024)

The Situation: The romance didn’t spark fireworks, but they are growing on you.

An arranged marriage isn’t exactly the fairy-tale start you would dream of… but love finds a way.

Stormskerry Maja is a captivating period romance set in the 19th century during the Crimean War, on the fictional storm-battered island Stormskerry. The story follows Maja, a strong-willed seventeen-year-old woman, who is married off to Janne, a humble fisherman—much to her own dismay. Life on the remote island is harsh, where isolation, brutal storms, and the tensions of the British occupation test them at every turn.

But what begins as duty slowly turns into unexpected love. As Maja and Janne navigate survival, family life, and the challenges of the unforgiving island, they discover resilience and tenderness in each other.

The Verdict: Love takes time, and while it may not always sweep you off your feet at the start, you might discover something tender and much, much warmer.

For The People-Pleasers: The Kiss

The Situation: You’re with them because you can’t determine if you love them or just feel bad about leaving.

Directed by the Oscar and double Palme d’Or-winning Danish director, Bille August. An epic romantic drama set in Denmark in 1913, The Kiss follows Anton, a conscientious young cavalry officer whose sense of duty often overrides his emotions. After a chance encounter brings him to Baron von Løvenskjold’s castle, Anton meets Edith, the Baron’s daughter, who is wheelchair-bound after an accident. Treated with pity by most, Edith is drawn to Anton because he sees her as an equal. As their connection deepens, Anton finds himself unable to tell whether what he feels is love or obligation, or worse still—pity. In trying to do the “right” thing, he slowly entangles himself in promises he may not be able to keep.

The Verdict: Hard no. If you’re a people-pleaser in a situationship because you "don't want to be mean," that relationship just isn’t for you! Hurting someone is difficult, but staying out of pity is worse. Watch this as a cautionary tale of what happens when you don't speak your truth.
