After a merry lantern parade, two-year-old Paulina disappears from her room. The daughter of the well-known TV presenter Caroline Schäfer was put to sleep by the nanny, but now there is suddenly a doll in the cot. Chief Inspector Martin Brühl is notified, and the surrounding streets, wooded areas and adjacent bodies of water are combed. The parents are convinced that their child was kidnapped and cannot have run away alone. Brühl tries to calm the mother down, but he finds it difficult because there was a similar case two years ago, which unfortunately didn't end well. The police meticulously prepare the handover, but Brühl fears that no one will collect the money, as in the Roth case two years ago. Based on some clues, Brühl discovers that the current kidnapping could be related to the Roth case. Martin, who is now sleepless and rushes from track to track, from contradiction to contradiction with nightmare visions, threatens to finally lose himself in the case.
