In Africa, the Big Five animals are the lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant and Cape buffalo. The term was coined by big-game hunters, and refers to the five most difficult animals in Africa to hunt on foot. Most of these animals have been classified as vulnerable or critically endangered, so hunting them is greatly restricted. The African buffalo is the most popular animal to hunt, but its population is quickly declining in uncontrolled areas due to poaching and urbanization.
