Thirteen-year-old Masha has grown up between the boxing ring and the streets of provincial Russian town in the turbulent 90’s. Her closest friends are young gangsters who kill, rob, steal and are loathed by the entire town. But in young girl’s eyes they are the salt of the Earth, the family that loves and protects her. Masha discovers the taste for jazz and dreams of becoming a singer. Ultimately, she realizes who the men around her truly are, and what they had done to her family. Once grown up, Masha leaves hometown for Moscow in attempt to start new life. But when the past catches up with her Masha is forced to return to the place where she spent her childhood for the closure.

Director's Statement
Anastasia Palchikova was one of the most sought-after screenwriters and showrunners in Russia, and one of the most prominent Russian directors. Anastasia was awarded the Best Screenwriter Award by the Russian Film Academy for her film BOLSHOY, which revolves around a ballerina vying for a place at the Bolshoy Theatre. She also received a nomination for Best Screenplay for her dramedy HER NAME WAS MUMU, based on the true story of a young woman sent to discredit and expose prominent oppositionists of the government.
Anastasia's feature directorial debut was her semi-autobiographical film MASHA, a coming-of-age drama about a girl growing up in the Russian mob who dreams of becoming a jazz singer.
She is now a permanent resident of London, developing British and international projects.
