New Discoveries:

Wonderfully Beautiful (2022)

(Comedy/Romance)

Germany

Am I beautiful enough? That’s a question many girls and women are taught to ask themselves, especially in a time where the media has enabled greater scrutiny and critique of female bodies. German Box Office Success Wonderfully Beautiful follows five vastly different women in their struggle to conform to traditional beauty ideals and gender roles.

There is Frauke (Martina Gedeck), who is nearing 60 and feels undesirable in her ageing body. Her daughter Julie (Emilia Schüle) is looking for her breakthrough as a model and believes the only way to do so is to mould her body to fit the impossible industry standards. Julie’s sister-in-law Sonja (Karoline Herfurth), who has just gone through two pregnancies, struggles to come to terms with the changes in her body. Sonja’s best friend Vicky (Nora Tschirner) is also convinced that in a patriarchal society, relationships between men and women can never be equal, much to the frustration of her colleague and suitor Franz (Maximilian Brückner).

Through the women’s unique experiences, Wonderfully Beautiful weaves an uplifting story about each character’s search for love and acceptance within themselves.

Catch the 2022 German Box Office Hit Wonderfully Beautiful at 9PM, 25 Dec, on CinemaWorld.
