That’s why we’ve curated an exciting lineup of movies based on true stories from around the globe. These films illuminate the human spirit, revisit forgotten histories, and bring attention to the voices often left unheard.

This month’s selection features six compelling titles that explore courage, resilience, and real-life heroism—and a special addition of one heartwarming dog movie that features the life of an adorable Maremma Sheepdog!

Whether you're a history buff, a fan of heartfelt, inspirational dramas, or simply love discovering stories rooted in real-life, CinemaWorld’s collection of international true story films offers something meaningful and entertaining for all.

Codename Holec (2016)

Set in 1968 Prague, during the Russian invasion of the city, Codename Holec begins with the young and ambitious filmmaker Honza David and his lover Eva going into the midst of the battle to capture history on his camera. When the two try to smuggle their film to Vienna, they meet the film’s protagonist Helmut Zilk—a key figure in the political scene during the late 20th century.

A real-life double agent that worked for the CSSR secret service in the 60s, Helmut was a known womanizer and contradictory figure. Through a blend of tense espionage and intimate drama, this fictionalised historical account of Helmut’s life explores his constant moral dilemma as an informant for the secret service and his personal entanglements, torn between duty and disillusionment.

Margherita Hack – The Lady Of The Stars (2024)

Following the inspirational life story of great Italian astrophysicist, Margherita Hack, this autobiography charts the life of the woman who revolutionised the world of astrophysics in Italy.

This emotionally rich biopic follows the life of Italy’s most renowned astrophysicist, from her early years as a spirited, inquisitive child in Florence to her groundbreaking appointment as the first woman to direct the Trieste Astronomical Observatory. More than just a scientific portrait, the film paints an intimate and emotional portrait of Hack’s unwavering authenticity, her lifelong fight against social conventions, and the curiosity that fuelled her pursuit of knowledge.

El Alamein—The Line Of Fire (2002)

A haunting and introspective war film set against the desert’s blistering days and freezing nights, this World War II drama by three-time Italian Academy Awards winner Enzo Monteleone captures the stark realities of warfare in North Africa. Far from glorified heroism, El Alamein—The Line of Fire offers a sobering, visceral portrait of the Italian army’s desperate struggle against the advancing British forces in Egypt.

Seen through the eyes of Serra, a university student from Palermo who volunteers to fight in Africa in 1942, what begins as a slow, biting boredom and lethargy that infects the Italian tropes soon turns to a gritty battle between the warring forces.

A rare war film from Italy that parallels Hollywood favourites like Saving Private Ryan, El Alamein takes an unvarnished look at the erosion of hope, the confusion of battle, and the quiet, human moments that survive amid the chaos.

Needle Park Baby (2020)

Set against the shocking backdrop of Zürich’s infamous needle park in the 90s, where heroin use and street dealing were once permitted in plain sight, Needle Park Baby offers a haunting, deeply human perspective on a forgotten chapter of Swiss history.

Told through the voice of 11-year-old Mia, we witness a world unravelled by addiction, where innocence struggles to survive amid chaos. As one of the many children left to fend for themselves while their parents spiralled into drug dependency, Mia clings to her imagination and new friendships to find hope, even as she’s forced into the role of caregiver to her heroin-addicted mother.

Based on the bestselling autobiography Platzspitzbaby by Michelle Halbheer, herself a survivor of Zürich’s open drug scene, this poignant coming-of-age story captures the quiet resilience of a child determined to reclaim her life. With raw performances and an unflinching eye, director Pierre Monnard reframes the drug crisis not through the lens of addicts, but through the heartbreak of those left in their wake.

Life Feels Good (2013)

Chronicling the inspirational true story of Mateusz, a man with cerebral palsy who spent most of his life misdiagnosed and misunderstood. Labeled as intellectually disabled in childhood, he was believed to be incapable of real connection and was gradually shut off from the outside world.

25 years later, 30-year-old Mateusz is institutionalised in a clinic for the mentally disabled, where he is to be assessed for his ability to function in society.

Following Mateusz’s life through sadness, joy, loneliness and love, Life Feels Good is a heartfelt story about the unwavering human spirit amid life’s obstacles.

Oddball (2015)

Starring a brilliant local cast including Shane Jacobson (Kenny) and Sarah Snook (Succession, Predestination), Oddball is a cosy, feel-good family film. Based on the true story that stole headlines and hearts across Australia, Oddball brings together the charm of coastal life, the cuteness of penguins, and the chaos of a dog who just won’t play by the rules.

Set in the picturesque town of Warrnambool, this delightful adventure follows Swampy Marsh, an eccentric chicken farmer, and his granddaughter Olivia as they hatch a wild plan: train their unruly sheepdog Oddball to protect a colony of penguins from invading foxes. The fate of their beloved sanctuary rests on one very fluffy, very unpredictable hero.
