To showcase the unique taste of each member of Team CinemaWorld, we’ve gathered some of our favourite films from CinemaWorld’s 2025 curation to kick-start the new year.

(The quotes below have been edited for readability.)

Alpha. (2024)

“Alpha is a gripping father-son drama set against the stunning backdrop of the Alps, blending breathtaking visual aesthetics with a tense exploration of family dynamics. Directed with a keen eye for expansive vistas and intimate character moments, the film beautifully contrasts the vastness of nature with the emotional isolation between its central characters. A slow-burning exploration of family, isolation, and survival, Alpha is recommended for viewers who appreciate emotionally charged dramas that let atmosphere, performance, and visual storytelling do the heavy lifting.”

Under The Fig Trees (2021)

“A gorgeously shot. An intimate coming-of-age Tunisian ensemble film. In this sensual, sun-kissed drama, the young women tease, gossip, argue, and the would-be lovers flirt in between fig harvesting. With close-ups and medium shots, viewers are invited to eavesdrop on the fig pickers’ hushed exchanges and witness their subtle body language. Each exchange reveals their personal yearnings and anxieties.  A tenderly evocative film on friendship, gender, and social dynamics. I dig plump and juicy figs too!”

Mr. K (2024)

“A style-driven film, using the hotel maze as a symbol to explore loneliness and existence… [T]he more you try to escape, the more [you’d be] swept away. The people in the hotel are faced with a dilemma between freedom and survival, with some choosing to survive under the [hotel’s] hierarchy and others doing whatever it takes to be free… If you enjoy psychological maze[s] [and] unresolved mysteries, this film is worth watching repeatedly…”

- Terris, Operations

I Have Electric Dreams (2022)

A polarising film about growing pains and fractured relationships, Valentina Maurel lays it thick with this coming-of-age Costa Rican drama, capturing girlhood with such unfiltered brutality and tenderness. Parts of Eva’s story reminded me of my turbulent teenage years—it’s certainly a film for all the youths trying to figure out life and themselves.

- Hoiye, Marketing

Stormskerry Maja (2024)

An homage to Finland's natural beauty. Nature flourishes around and within Maja, making her invincible yet equally vulnerable. A heartwarming, honest film that departs from box-office director Tiina Lymi’s usual comedy films, but illuminates every soul that has cast eyes on it.

- Joelle, Growth

Deep In The Wood (2015)

The story is unpredictable and constantly prompts you to question what truly happened and who was involved. With hints of the supernatural… every scene feels purposeful. This movie presents itself with many layers of intricacies, and the final twist (and twists) is cleverly executed, delivering a satisfying payoff. Worth watching.
