5 Action Thrillers That Define the Genre | CinemaWorld

Action-packed movies don’t need to have cheap plotlines. This June, we’re spotlighting five high-octane action movies that tell unique and gripping stories from around the world. From true story-inspired war dramas, historical epics, to cinematic survival thrillers—we’ve got them all.

Dive into a high-adrenaline season this June with these five movies on CinemaWorld.

1. Detour (2016)

UK, South Africa

A stylish, split-screen thriller that plays the "what-if" narrative. When law student Harper (starring Tye Sheridan from Ready Player One and the X-Men franchise) suspects his stepfather is responsible for the accident that put his mother in a coma, he drowns his sorrows in a dive bar and ends up making a dangerous pact with a grifter named Johnny. The film follows two parallel timelines: one where Harper goes through with the revenge plot, and one where he doesn’t. It’s a slick, genre-bending ride that feels like a fever dream.

2. NR24 (2024)

Norway

A gripping biographical war drama, NR24 takes us to the heart of occupied Norway during World War II. Directed by John Andreas Andersen, the film chronicles the life of Gunnar Sønsteby (also known as Number 24)—an ordinary young man who becomes the perfect spy. One of Norway’s most decorated resistance heroes, he climbed the ranks to become the leader of the "Oslo Gang" and fought against the Nazi occupation during the 1940s.

The narrative shifts between past operations led by a young Sønsteby and the present-day lecture he gives to a class of students in the 21st century. As his life story unfolds, NR24 explores the moral weight of resistance, offering a visceral and moving look at the human cost of fighting fascism.

NR24 is Norway's top Norwegian film at the box office in 2024.

3. Alpha. (2018)

Switzerland, Slovenia, Netherlands

Alpha. is a breathtaking survival thriller set against the majestic but lethal backdrop of the Alps. The film follows Rein, who is escaping into the mountains after his mother’s death, only for his peace to be disrupted by the arrival of his overbearing father. What begins as a petty struggle for dominance between father and son quickly escalates into a life-or-death battle against the elements.

4. Bad Investigate (2018)

Portugal

This Portuguese crime-comedy takes you on a wild ride, following a corrupt cop, Romeu, who enlists the help of two unlikely partners, Cid and Alex, to intercept a dangerous drug dealer seeking revenge. As the criminal hunts down his brother’s killer, an FBI agent is also hot on his tail.

Action-packed and hilariously crass, Portuguese box office hit Bad Investigate cranks the crime-action genre a notch up with parallel stories that clash in a chaotic showdown.

5. Red Eagle (2011)

Spain

A Spanish box office hit set in 17th-century Europe, Red Eagle is a historical action adventure about feuding empires, glory, and betrayal. The film stars Spanish actor David Janer as a masked hero fighting for justice amidst a treacherous summit where Portugal, France, and England are all trying to conquer the Spanish empire. As traitors plot to carve up the kingdom, the Red Eagle must fight for the freedom of his people. It is a thrilling cinematic expansion of the beloved Spanish television series that captures the grandeur and grit of a legendary hero.
